"The most effective way of making everybody serve the single system of ends toward which the social plan is directed is to make everybody believe in those ends. To make a totalitaian system function efficiently, it is not enough that everybody should be forced to work for the same ends. It is essential that the people should come to regard them as their own ends......" p. 168
Q: Why does it matter if the individual shares his goal with the society? ... Especially if the goals are chosen for the individual?
A: Look at christianity the end goal is to go to heaven. Deciding to be a christian means you have let them decide your end goal is heaven. However in order to make the religion and beliefs successful you much teach each and every person who pracitces it to think the same way. Though there are different branches in christianity each branches end goal is heaven, yet for example in catholicism if you dont agree with certain things of the church then you are not considered a catholic you are simply considered a christian. Totalitarian systems control what you think therefore when they put out propaganda you can only believe that their stuff is the best and as for everybody else propaganda you either dont know it exsists or you believe it sucks. If in christianity each branch had a different goal then nobodys goal would be achieved or successful not the individuals or the communitys. So to make a totalitarian society work the individual has to share the goal of the society in order to achieve or obtain any goal.
