"Although under competition the probability that a man who starts poor will reach great wealth is much smaller than is true of the man who has inherited property, it is not only possible for the former, but the competitive system is the only one where it depends solely on him and not on the favors of the mighty, and where nobody can prevent a man from attempting to achieve this result." p.113
Q: So under competition the lucky are more successful yet have a higher risk of failure, therefore does this make luck or competition better?
A: Both have a possiblity of failure, competition because it depends on the man and his readiness for game and luck because he depends on someone else and well if they dont come through he is screwed. Although you are assuming that the competition man is a strong hard working man, alot of people who begin as tough competitors get tired easy and give up. i believe it to be false that no man can keep a competitve man from achieving his goal though it is more the competitive mans fault for giving up everybody else around him is trying to get him to fail and sometimes those are the stronger people. I guess in a sense you have to have both luck and competition, you have to be lucky to get the competition and you have to compete to get the luck.
