Kelsey Marsh-ch.2

Q: " The new freedom promised however was to be freedom from necessity, release from compulsion of the circumstances which inevitably limit the range of choice of all of us, although for some very much more than others. Befor man could be truely free, the despotism of physical want had to be broken , the restraints of the economic system relaxed. Freedom in this sense is, of course, merely another name for power or wealth." (p.30) How is freedom confused with Power?

A: In every branch of government freedom is a tool for power. In democracy everybody is completely free and they use their freedom to gain power. Especially in democracy they use their economic freedom to gain power in wealth. Those who grow up in a democratic society basically are so free that they have everything they could want except for its human nature to always keep wanting something so these democrats want to be most successful. Those who have the most freedom in a democratic society have the highest label and the most money. Take a look at cops they get away with breaking the law because they are the ones who enforce it so when they break it there is nobody to bust their chops because they are suppose to be busting them (an instance where power is used for freedom). And look at Paris Hilton, she commits a crime similar to that of the average man, yet unlike the average man she was given extra privaleges to pay her time, money talks (an instance where wealth is used for power which gives freedom).
In socialism, it is those who run the government that have all the power but to those who dont know any better and are a part of the community but do not have a powerful government position they think the socialist leaders have all the freedom in the world. However it is not that they truely have freedom yet they have the power to give themselves freedom.
